When Jamaal Charles went down with an apparent season-ending knee injury fantasy football owners immediately started to plan their Week 6 waiver adds. Knile Davis may have seemed like the obvious choice to replace Charles as the Kansas City Chiefs starting running back, but then we were thrown a curve ball. Chiefs coach Andy Reid gave Charcandrick West the bulk of the team's carries following Charles' injury.
West finished the Chiefs' Week 5 loss to the Chicago Bears with seven carries for 31 yards. Davis only had two carries for two yards.
This is a very tricky situation for fantasy owners looking to replace Charles, and for owners hoping to gain another starting running back via the waiver wire. Davis is believed to be the better runner of the two, but past fumbling issues has put him in the doghouse with his coaches. West is a bit of an unknown, but he wouldn't have to be super talented to find success on a Chiefs team that's determined to run the football.
Both West and Davis are worth picking up. I believe they will be in a timeshare going forward this season unless one of them completely outplays the other. West seems like the safer option right now, but Davis has the talent to run away with the job. West, however, did receive two targets in the passing game against the Bears, which gives him the nod in PPR leagues.
