Tight End Outlooks: Heath Miller, Charles Clay and Maxx Williams

Tight end is one position that often gets overlooked when it comes to fantasy football teams. During drafts, many people decide to wait too long to take a tight end and if that was the case this season, those people may have ended up with Heath Miller, Charles Clay and/or Maxx Williams as one of their tight ends.

Miller and Clay have had flashes of greatness throughout the season, but Williams has not been able to live up to the potential that made him a second round draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens.

The good news for Williams is that he may get the opportunity to prove himself in Week 14 due to starting tight end Crockett Gillmore expected to miss the game with a back injury.

But I wouldn’t start Williams unless you absolutely have no other choice. Not only has he struggled thus far this season with only 19 receptions for 168 yards and one touchdown, he will also likely have Jimmy Clausen throwing him the ball because quarterback Matt Schaub hasn’t practiced all week with a chest and shoulder injury.

I would consider Williams a low-end TE2 against the Seattle Seahawks.

As for Miller, it sounds like the Steelers will have him back in Week 14 after he missed last week’s game with a rib injury. Whenever Ben Roethlisberger is in the lineup, Miller usually sees consistent productivity. His ceiling is low, but he is a reliable option.

Through 11 games he has 39 catches for 390 yards and a touchdown. I would consider him a TE2 this week against the Cincinnati Bengals. If you have to start him, I wouldn’t worry about it. There are always worse options than Miller.

As for Buffalo Bills tight end Charles Clay, he was listed as a limited participant in Thursday’s practice with a knee injury. However, it sounds like he’ll definitely be good to go in Week 14 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Clay isn’t as consistent as Miller, but he does have a slightly higher ceiling. Through 12 games he has hauled in 50 passes for 519 yards and three touchdowns.

Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been playing lights out, which has benifited Clay a great deal. Last week against the Houston Texans Clay caught four balls for 66 yards and a touchdown.

I would slot Clay in as a TE2 against the Eagles this week with the potential to put up TE1 numbers.
