Can Yasmany Tomas Step Up In 2016?

The Diamondbacks took a big leap of faith when they signed Yasmany Tomas to a six-year, $68.5 million contract. Unfortunately for them, and for Tomas' fantasy owners in 2015, Tomas did not perform up to the level a contract like that would merit. He was also a disaster at third base so the dual position eligibility value is gone. The average and OBP aren't great, and he's going to strikeout a lot. That's the bad.

The good news is that Tomas is still playing in a hitters' park and for a team that isn't about to give up on him yet. He is projected to bat cleanup behind Paul Goldschmidt so he is in a prime position to do some damage. He is still 25, but all parties involved are hoping the growing pains are done and that Tomas can start producing. With Ender Inciarte gone, Tomas has a path to everyday at-bats. This will help him get into a much better rhythm than he did last year once he was put into a platoon situation.

There is upside here, but don't reach for Tomas. At this point he's more of an upside guy to grab later on in drafts until he proves he can deliver on his lofty expectations.
