NBA Rookie Fantasy Profile: Malik Monk

Analysis: There were plenty of question marks surrounding Monk's draft stock. He's listed as a shooting guard, but he is a bit small at only 6'3". Some teams project him as a point guard, but he did not display traditional skills of a point guard. Even though he is seen as a tweener, Monk was selected in the lottery by the Charlotte Hornets. They said he could spend some time at point guard, but will primarily play shooting guard.

Monk was predominantly a scorer at Kentucky, averaging 19.8 points per game in his only season. Besides scoring, he averaged only 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Even though he was their top offensive weapon, Monk was able to post averages of 49.7% from two-point range, 39.7% from three-point range, and 82.2% from the free throw line. Like many college players, Monk was a player that focused much more on offense than he did on defense.

Monk will likely begin the season as the Hornets sixth man. He can backup both Kemba Walker and Nicolas Batum, as Charlotte has made it clear he will see minutes at both point guard and shooting guard. He will be able to bring immediate production off the bench, but he will struggle to add anything else early in his career.

Bottom Line: Monk can immediately produce points if he is given the minutes. He will struggle to produce any other statistics, though. He will be a high upside option that will likely have games in which he scores upwards of 25 and games in which he barely scores at all.
