Green Bay Will Consider Internal Candidates for Defensive Coordinator
7 years agoGreen Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy unveiled the list of internal candidates who will be considered for the vacant defensive coordinator position in a press conference on Thursday. Those candidates are safeties coach Darren Perry, cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr. and assistant head coach/linebackers coach Winston Moss. These candidates, along with some of the external candidates like Vic Fangio, that have drawn speculation suggest Green Bay is looking to retain their 3-4 defensive scheme. Of the three internal candidates, Whitt Jr. is the only one that should create any excitement. He has managed to develop numerous unheralded players to superstar levels like Tramon Williams, James Shields and Casey Hayward. He also was the cornerbacks coach when Charles Woodson won NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He helped Damarius Randall turn things around after a disappointing 2016 and always seems to get the most out of his guys despite low pedigree, like when he turned undrafted rookie free-agent Ladarius Gunter into a serviceable starting cornerback last year. Green Bay’s defense will improve after separating themselves from long-time coordinator Dom Capers, but there would certainly be more reason to be optimistic if they went with Whitt Jr.
