7 years agoAs reported by Rob Demovsky, Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews (knee) underwent a procedure that was described as a “clean-up” for his knee shortly after Green Bay’s season ended. Matthews returned to his role as an outside rusher this year on a full-time basis. It was in that role that he finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2010. He had spent some time playing inside linebacker on account of injuries for much of the past two seasons. Still, he was ultimately disappointing and didn’t have much of an impact in 2017. He has lacked a burst rushing the passer that he had in years past, and his best position going forward may be inside linebacker. He is scheduled to make $11.4 million in 2018, a large amount for either an ineffective pass rusher or quality inside linebacker, so it seems likely that he will either be cut by Green Bay or forced to restructure his contract. Finding an elite outside pass rusher to pair with Nick Perry will be a high priority for Green Bay this offseason.--Tyger McGuiggan
