ANALYSIS: Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams came into the 2018 campaign looking to make amends for a disappointing rookie season. So far, so good. The 2017 No. 7 overall selection missed the first six games last season as he battled back and knee ailments all season long. When he did get on the field, the 23-year-old was ineffective, as he came down with just 11 of the 23 balls thrown (47.8% catch rate) his way.
This season, Williams has assertive himself as one of the top playmakers for an explosive Chargers offense. The second-year pro, who has taken advantage of Travis Benjamin's (foot) absence the past two games, hauled in four of his team-high seven targets for 81 yards and a pair of touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He has six catches and three touchdowns over the last two games with all three scores coming in "tight windows" -- one or fewer yards of separation from his defender -- according to NFL NextGen stats.
Overall, Williams ranks third on the Chargers in both receptions (11) and targets (15). He tops the squad with a 17.2 yards per catch average as four of his receptions have been for 20 or more yards, tying Keenan Allen for the team lead, and is second in receiving yards (189). After being on the field for a tad over 53% of the offensive snaps in Week 1, the big 6-foot-4, 220-pounder has seen his playing time increase to over 67% of the snaps in the last two contests. With an appetizing Week 4 matchup against San Francisco -- which has allowed the seventh most receptions and third most receiving touchdowns -- Williams is an intriguing waiver wire option.
