Austin Hedges' Job Security Appears Safe For Now
6 years agoSan Diego Padres catcher Austin Hedges launched two home runs Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels, giving him three dingers and a 1.159 OPS in 19 spring plate appearances. The 26-year-old is set to begin his third full season as the Padres primary backstop and one of baseball’s premier defensive catchers. While he’s demonstrated pop with 32 homers over the past two seasons, Hedges has persistently struggled with strikeout issues and holds a career .210/.258/.378 slash. Hedges could deliver serviceable power numbers at his 308 ADP, but with prospect catcher Francisco Mejia aching for opportunities, Hedges’ currently favorable time share behind the dish could evolve into a more even split.
