ANALYSIS: The tight end position has been a hot mess so far this year. Judging only by the first quarter of the season, there were five tight ends to score at least 50 fantasy points in that span in 2018, while we have had eight this year. If we lower the points threshold, something similar happens, which shows how much the gap has closed at the position. Streaming is the cool thing, folks, and Gerald Everett is here to prove it!
In the same four-game span in 2019, Everett was part of the group of 24 tight ends to score a combined 25 fantasy points or more. That gave him an average of 6.25 points per game, but then Week 5 arrived and he blasted a massive 20.6 mark against Seattle this past Thursday. It would have been a complete outlier of a game if it wasn't fresh off him hanging 15.4 points on Tampa Bay in Week 4. His Week 5 outing against Seattle was all positives. Everett played in more snaps (58) than at any other point this season, out-snapped Tyler Higbee (40), saw a season-high 11 targets and hauled in seven for 136 yards. Frankly, he only lacked a score to put on a monster day.
Entering 2019, there were doubts about Everett's value in Los Angeles. Higbee started as the No. 1 option but the table is turning in Everett's favor. Although Higbee is a more stable option in fantasy (he's averaging eight points per game, and he hasn't deviated more than four points from that mark yet), Everett brings the upside with two 15-plus points performances already to his name. Everett is already the fourth-most targeted player of the Rams behind the three-headed WR-monster and surpassing Todd Gurley's workload on the passing game. He has 26 targets to Higbee's 18, and Everett has racked up 223 yards to Higbee's 129.
There aren't many tight ends as hot as Everett is right now, and there isn't a position more volatile in fantasy than tight end. If you have been streaming the position already, consider Everett a serious candidate to add through waivers this week.
