4 years agoChicago White Sox first baseman Andrew Vaughn could be used as the Opening Day left fielder, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports on Friday. According to Van Schouwen, manager Tony La Russa said, "If he's the best choice for Opening Day in left field, I'd play him," just one day after Vaughn got his first start of the spring in left field. The White Sox are scrambling to fill the holes left in their outfield depth, after Eloy Jimenez will miss most of the year with a torn pectoral and Adam Engel is set to open the year on the injured list with a hamstring injury. Vaughn is the top prospect in Chicago's system, and has looked good this spring as he is slashing .269/.377/.462 with two homers, five RBI and a steal in 22 games, while also recording 11 strikeouts to seven walks. Vaughn was already a lock for the Opening Day roster, but playing in the outfield gives him some positional flexibility in fantasy. He drew rave reviews at the alternate site in 2020, and he could be a good, late-round sleeper in all formats.--Michael Grennell - RotoBaller
