NASCAR Rankings Analysis
Hey, everyone! Welcome back to RotoBaller's free driver rankings.
This week, we're at Sears Point, I mean Infineon, I mean Sonoma, sorry.
Road courses are always fun because there's a level of unpredictability factored into things. Of course, that can suck when doing fantasy, because it makes it harder to build a solid lineup.
Here are some various thoughts on this week's rankings:
- Martin Truex Jr. is going to be chalk this week. He starts 19th and has three wins here, including the last two races here. Of course, he only has an average finish of 18.1, so maybe those last two Sonoma races were a fluke? Maybe you go lighter on him just in case? Maybe?
- This is a road course, thus Chase Elliott is a strong play. That's just how it goes.
- Want some surprise drivers who could score big in fantasy? As my rankings show, I'm high on Ross Chastain, Chase Briscoe, and Michael McDowell. The case for all of them: Chastain starts 29th and had his only Cup Series top five at COTA, Briscoe starts 25th and won the ARCA West race here this weekend, and McDowell starts 21st and has always run well at road courses.
- Kurt Busch starts 30th. Make sure you have him in a good number of your lineups.
- There are some drivers who start too high for me to play. Austin Dillon starts sixth and has an average finish of 19th here, for instance. There's just no way I have him in any cash lineups, and I doubt he's in any of my GPP lines either. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in 14th and Bubba Wallace in 15th are in similar positions, though I like Wallace slightly more than I like Dillon. Don't love either driver, though!
- This is a race where some of those backmarker teams have slightly more appeal than usual because road courses get weird, but there's still no reason to go after any of them. I think Scott Heckert is the best play of those guys as the 78 is a step above those other car back there and he's got road racing experience. I threw him in a lineup because I was chasing a DraftKings reward for scoring a lot with a low-cost driver, so there's that.
- You might be familiar with the Truck Series and see Ben Rhodes name and think "oh, a sleeper!" He is...probably not a sleeper as he makes his Cup debut.
