NASCAR Rankings Analysis
Welcome to Kyle Larson International Speedway.
Sorry, I mean Michigan International Speedway. But with Kyle Larson running for a top NASCAR team now, we might as well rename it.
Why? Because he was already dominant here when driving for Chip Ganasssi.
In 12 Cup Series starts here, Larson has three victories, winning in 2016 and then sweeping the 2017 races. He wasn't as good after that, only leading one lap since then, but he did finish third here in 2019.
But now that Larson is driving for Rick Hendrick and has already won five races this season, it's hard to not see him leading a ton of laps in this race. Sure, starting on pole means that he only has downside when it comes to place differential, but this is a week where I'm willing to look past that.
I was really unsure how to rank Kevin Harvick this week. He's higher on FD, where place differential matters less. Harvick has won four of the last five races here, but he's also won zero races in 2021. We know that he knows this track, but he's also just not shown a ton of speed.
Brad Keselowski is just barely second in my rankings. He starts 20th and the place differential upside almost made me put him over Larson, especially considering Brad's had some good runs here. None of those runs have landed him in Victory Lane though, so I ultimately went with Larson. Still, Brad's a really strong play.
Looking for place differential? Christopher Bell starts 28th. He's in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. There's a ton of upside here and you should probably have some shares of Bell -- and, to a lesser extent, of Austin Dillon, who starts 26th and has won here in Xfinity.
I'm also really high on Daniel Suarez (starts 30th) and Ross Chastain (starts 22nd). Obviously not going to have the speed that Bell will have, but both are in solid cars and should have plenty of upside.
I also think this could be a breakthrough week for Bubba Wallace. He's won here in the Truck Series, despite driving a pretty mediocre truck in that 2017 race. He starts 15th, so there's plenty of downside because there's not a ton of place differential upside, but this is a good week to bet on Wallace getting his second top 10 of the season. He looked good in Saturday's Xfinity race before getting caught up in an accident.
(There also seems to be something weird with the 15 car -- Davison isn't being scored as having a start spot in DraftKings and Joey Gase is appearing on FanDuel. I ranked Davison based on where I would have him normally, but feel free to completely ignore him just in case I missed something.)
