Hi, RotoBallers! It's almost NFL time. There's a seemingly endless amount of platforms out there for you to play daily fantasy sports on, but our friends over at OwnersBox have something that you can't get everywhere else: DFS-style contests with a SuperFlex spot!
I don't know about you, but that's super exciting for me, as I've been trying to play more SuperFlex when it comes to season-long and now I get the option to play it for DFS-style contests as well.
We'll be bringing you weekly lineup pick articles throughout this season, including this NFL article for the Week One $100k contest on OwnersBox. But in addition to that, we wanted to take some time to introduce you to the SuperFlex game and to help you navigate the OwnersBox site.
Okay, So What Is SuperFlex?
Let's start here. If you play in a lot of season-long dynasty leagues, you've probably heard the term SuperFlex plenty. But if you're exclusively a daily fantasy player, this whole concept might be new to you.
To put it simply, a SuperFlex spot is like a Flex spot, except you can put a quarterback in it. But what makes SuperFlex more fun than just playing in a two-QB league is that you don't have to put a quarterback in that slot. You've got options! It makes for some interesting strategizing!
Sure, you'll usually want to use a quarterback there, because quarterbacks usually have a much-safer floor than position players. But there have also been plenty of times when I've been in a season-long league and the QB in my SF spot failed to produce as many fantasy points as a position player on my bench did.
When it comes to DFS-style contests, I'll be honest: because this is such a new thing, I can't exactly tell you yet what the absolute best thing to do with a SuperFlex spot is on a weekly basis. And that's part of what's going to make OwnersBox so much fun this season: we'll all be learning together about making a SuperFlex spot work in DFS-style lineups. I'm excited.
How Does OwnersBox Work?
There's a lot of stuff on OwnersBox. The site's forte is their weekly fantasy sports, where you can build a weekly baseball salary cap lineup. If you haven't had a chance to check out their weekly game, you should definitely do so.
But as for football -- which I assume is the reason you're reading this -- let's talk about what OwnersBox offers.
For the salary cap contests, you're picking nine players:
- one QB
- two RB
- two WR
- one TE
- two FLEX (RB/WR/TE)
- one SUPERFLEX (QB/RB/WR/TE)
So, there's no kickers and no defense to worry about. From my perspective, that's great -- D/ST can be so hard to predict on a week-to-week basis, which frustrates me plenty when it comes to building DFS lineups on other sites. And kickers -- well, kickers are best left to season-long, and even then, like half of my season-long leagues don't feature kickers.
So, anyway, you get $50,000 of salary to use, which is an average of $5,556 per player. Most of the top players cost over $7,500, so that means you're going to have to pick some sleepers, especially if you want to get one of the top plays. For example, Week 1's most expensive player is Christian McCaffrey, who costs $8,300. Add him, and you're down to an average of $5,213 left per player.
And since this is SuperFlex, you probably want to know about quarterback salaries. Patrick Mahomes is the most expensive for Week 1 at $8,100, while cheaper starting quarterbacks still cost a decent bit. Tyrod Taylor is probably the cheapest guy who'll definitely be a Week 1 starter and he checks in at $5,300. So if you want to grab a QB for that SuperFlex spot as well and you don't want to scrape the bottom of the barrel to do so, that'll knock your average salary remaining per spot down even more.
Again, I find this super exciting. The structure of these OwnersBox contests will mean that you'll have to make some tough lineup decisions and take some risks. I love that.
