Deeper League Waiver Wire: AL Edition (Canha, Marisnick, Milone)

Hey RotoBallers. The first week of the baseball season is in the books. Here is my week 2 rundown of valuable waiver wire options for AL-only fantasy leagues. The pickings can be pretty slim in deeper fantasy formats, so it's important to know which players are performing well. Whether your team is dealing with injuries or lack of production, here are a few waiver wire options to consider.

Mark Canha (1B, OAK) - 9% Owned

The Athletics were set on platooning Canha with fellow first baseman Ike Davis, with the former only starting against left-handed pitchers. However, Canha is off to a hot start and has found some extra playing time in the outfield as well. He has at least one in hit in all five games he has played in and has posted a .360 AVG with 6 runs, 1 HR, and 6 RBI. Canha is still relatively unproven as he has never played in the majors before this season. As long as he keeps producing offense, Canha will find his way into the lineup.

Jake Marisnick (OF, HOU) - 1% Owned

The Astros have a lot of emerging talent and Jake Marisnick is one of those exciting young players. Marisnick was traded to Houston last season after spending some time with the Marlins over the last few years. He stands 6' 4", 220 pounds and is just 24 years-old. He has a promising mix of power and speed and has shown his potential during the opening week of the season. Marisnick is hitting .400 with 1 R, 1 HR, 5 RBI, and 2 SB in five games played. He should be able to contribute some decent power numbers and stolen bases for fantasy owners.

Tommy Milone (SP, MIN) - 3% Owned

After getting bumped from the starting rotation in Oakland last season, Tommy Milone found himself in another battle for a starting spot in Minnesota this spring. All that competition appears to have paid off. Milone was brilliant in his first start of the year for the Twins. He struck out seven while allowing just two hits in 7.2 scoreless innings. Milone isn't likely to be that successful every time out, but he's a solid option for fantasy owners in need of some deep-league pitching. He has a career record of 33-23 and a 3.92 ERA. Fantasy owners should expect much of the same from Milone. He isn't going to be mentioned in any Cy Young conversations, but he'll win more often than he'll lose. If his first start is any indication of what's to come, it could be a solid season for Milone.
