Deeper League Waiver Wire: AL Edition (Flaherty, Young, O'Day)

Hey RotoBallers. Welcome to my Week 3 rundown of valuable waiver wire options for AL-Only fantasy baseball leagues. It's always a challenge to stay ahead of the curve in deeper fantasy formats, so it is important to know which players are performing well.

Whether your team is dealing with injuries or lack of production, here are a few waiver wire recommendations to consider picking up or adding to your fantasy teams.

Editor’s Note: to read about even more waiver wire options, be sure to check out our famous waiver wire pickups list which is a running list that is updated daily.

Ryan Flaherty (2B/3B/SS, BAL) - 1% Owned

With Jonathan Schoop sidelined for 6-8 weeks with a knee injury, Ryan Flaherty is now the Orioles primary second baseman for the immediate future. He has hit safely in all three games following Schoop's injury. Flaherty has value in his ability to fill a few different spots on fantasy rosters along with some power potential. He is eligible for three different infield positions and is hitting .286 with HR in the young season. Flaherty is a solid replacement for Schoop owners or any other fantasy teams looking for some middle infield help over the next few weeks.

Chris Young (OF, NYY) - 4% Owned

The one drawback to owning Chris Young right now is that he is not guaranteed to be in the lineup every day. With that said, Young has been making the most of his opportunities and could be in line for more consistent playing time. He has been starting mostly against left-handers; but, if he continues to produce the way he has over the first few weeks he'll be taking the field more often that not. Young is hitting .276 with 5 R, 3 HR and 8 RBI. All three of his home runs have come in the last ten days. Young has a solid mix of speed and power that can aid fantasy owners looking for outfield help.

Darren O'Day (RP, BAL) - 3% Owned

In deeper fantasy leagues, the well can sometimes run dry on quality starters and closers. Despite not tallying many wins or saves, Darren O'Day is still an excellent fantasy option. He can help lower the ERA and WHIP of any fantasy squad. In seven innings, O'Day has allowed just two hits and one run while striking out seven. He has a 1.29 ERA and a minuscule 0.43 WHIP. O'Day has three holds so far in six appearances and could even pick up a few saves over the course of the long season. He would probably be next in line for closing duties if Zach Britton were to get injured. Instead of reaching for mediocre starters, fantasy owners may want to consider adding one of the league's most efficient relief pitchers.
