ANALYSIS: Injury alert! Injury alert! Nobody loves Baltimore's backfield, but that monster of a unit lost one of its three heads yesterday with Mark Ingram II falling down injured. With Ingram out, Gus Edwards was the most benefited rusher of the Ravens leading the team in rushing attempts yet not logging a single target.
This team has been using three tailbacks all season long in Ingram, Edwards, and rookie J.K. Dobbins with different usage patterns but a very similar volume of opportunities and snaps played. Ingram and Edwards have been the ground-game running backs, while Dobbins has had the largest number of targets. With Ingram out of the field, all points toward Edwards racking up rushing attempts.
Edwards has 48 carries for 218 yards and a touchdowns this season compared to Ingram's 225 yards on 50 carries. The numbers can't be closer, and only Ingram's 2 TDs are higher than Edwards' single score, giving him the edge on fantasy ranks.
While Edwards' upside was super-limited being part of a three-man backfield, it is just a two-part unit now (well, that and QB Lamar Jackson, who can kind of rush the ball too). It might end being nothing, but Ingram hurt his knee and he could miss a few games. With Baltimore entering its bye week, it's a good time to keep an eye on the injury report and jump all over Edwards if he gets dropped by another GM or you can still find him in the WW for free in the advantage of future matchups when Ingram will be missing and Edwards will be the Ravens no. 1 RB.
