5 years agoSan Diego Padres catcher Austin Hedges went 4-for-4 on Sunday with a go-ahead home run against the Phillies but was back on the bench on Monday in favor of youngster Francisco Mejia. Despite his struggles with the bat, Hedges leads the majors in defensive runs saved at the position, even though he's been seeing 42 percent of the catcher starts since Mejia came up two months ago. Hedges has actually hit better with sporadic playing time and it's unlikely he'll play regularly with Mejia hitting .325/.375/.516 since coming up on June 17. In the long term, it's highly unlikely that Mejia will be moved to the outfield. Hedges has heated up with the stick, but he's unlikely to see more starts through the rest of the season as long as Mejia stays hot.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
