Green Bay Hopes to Sign Aaron Rodgers to New Deal Quickly
7 years agoGreen Bay’s new general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed that he would like to sign quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a new deal sooner rather than later. When asked if he hopes to sign Rodgers before quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Drew Brees sign their next deals Gutekunst laughed and said, “That would be nice”. When Rodgers signed his current deal in 2013 he was the highest paid quarterback on an annual average basis. However, his deal has begun to lag behind much of the NFL in the past few seasons and it has possibly caused some tension. Rodgers is arguably the best quarterback in the NFL and likely feels he deserves to be paid as such. Cousins and Brees will reshape the NFL quarterback market when they sign their next deals, so Green Bay stands to save millions of dollars by getting a deal with Rodgers done before that happens. Despite not having a single pro bowler last year, Green Bay has very little cap space. Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson, Davante Adams, and the continued payments to former Packer Martellus Bennett will eat up about a quarter of Green Bay’s cap next year. Navigating this offseason will be a tremendous challenge for the new general manager.
