4 years agoAtlanta Braves starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz was designated for assignment on Monday after he once again showed decreased velocity in a 14-5 drubbing by the Rays. Folty's velocity was also down during exhibition and intrasquad games in summer camp. He allowed Tampa to score six earned runs (three home runs) in just 3 1/3 innings, with his fastball averaging only 89.3 mph and topping out at 92.9 mph. Foltynewicz's fastball averaged 95 mph last year and 96.5 mph in his 2018 All-Star season. If the 28-year-old isn't claimed off waivers, there's a chance he could remain with the team and work out at Triple-A Gwinnett. With Cole Hamels (triceps) out at least until Sept. 5, Atlanta could eventually turn to Ian Anderson, the No. 37 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. But Jhoulys Chacin, Josh Tomlin and Touki Toussaint could mix and match this Saturday when Folty's spot comes up again.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
