6 months agoCatcher Austin Hedges was traded by the San Diego Padres to the Cleveland Indians on Monday as part of the massive nine-player deal that sent starting pitcher Mike Clevinger to San Diego. San Diego recently acquired catchers Jason Castro and Aaron Nola from the Angels and Mariners, respectively. This left Hedges essentially without a role in San Diego. With the move to Cleveland, Hedges will still need to battle Roberto Perez and Sandy Leon for playing time. The 28-year-old Hedges has struggled immensely in the majors, exemplified by a career slash line of .199/.257/.359. On the season, Hedges is batting just .158 with three homers and six RBI. Despite the poor performance with the bat, Perez and Leon have also done little in 2020. As such, Hedges could see some regular playing time in Cleveland, though he remains off of fantasy radars for now.--Nick Ritrivi - RotoBaller

8 months agoSan Diego Padres manager Jayce Tingler confirmed catchers Francisco Mejia and Austin Hedges will play equally this season. The even timeshare negatively impacts fantasy prospects for both players, especially Mejia as the more attractive signal-caller. The 24-year-old has notched a .714 OPS in 320 plate appearances across three seasons. A former top prospect with hitting chops, Mejia hasn’t done enough defensively to earn full time duties. He is also an option at designated hitter. The 27-year-old Hedges struggled immensely in 2019 with the bat, registering an abysmal 47 wRC+. However, he’s one of baseball’s top defensive catchers with 52 defensive runs saved over the past three seasons. Fantasy-wise, the split dings Mejia’s prospects as a top-15 backstop but he should still be useful in best ball formats. Hedges likely won’t earn any roster spots outside of the deepest two-catcher leagues.--Andrew Le - RotoBaller
