PGA DFS: DraftKings Core Four - Genesis Invitational

Please enjoy this RotoBaller PGA Premium article free for a limited time.

Hello RotoBallers and thanks for joining me for the Genesis Invitational! In this article you will find my four favorite overall DraftKings DFS lineup plays for this week's PGA tournament.

The 'Core Four' will usually be spread across different DraftKings price points, but every week in PGA DFS is different and this article will reflect that by trying to give you an overall outlook of how the slate is shaping up. Be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

Genesis Invitational Notes

Man, I'm so glad to have Pebble Beach and these course-rotation events behind us! I'm also really excited for this week's Genesis Invitational. When you start digging into this tournament, it doesn't take long to recognize that this field is legit major-championship quality. If that isn't exciting enough, we also get to see four rounds on one of America's most iconic courses, Riviera Country Club! So while last week was all fun and games, this week will be serious business for all involved.

Because this field is so deep, we are faced with major-like pricing this week. It's a bit of a double-edged sword though, as there are almost too many good options, which can make narrowing down your lineup difficult. There are lots of ways you can build rosters for the Genesis. All the guys at the top of the board are very strong options and you can easily find enough value to squeeze them in. The mid-tier range is also very strong, which makes a more balanced approach also enticing. The path you choose for the Genesis will ultimately be a decision you'll have to make, but personally I'm looking for upside this week, which means targeting players that I believe have a legitimate shot to win or finish inside the top-10 in this event. I feel this week's Core Four reflects that approach, while leaving an average salary that makes it possible to round out rosters with players from the very fertile $7k range.

You can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week.

Justin Thomas - DraftKings: $11,000

This isn't a week that you have to pay up. It is very possible to start your roster construction in the $9k's and make an extremely strong lineup. That's actually the direction I was headed with the Core Four this week - and usually my preferred approach in general - but I just can't get away from Justin Thomas. He has some unfinished business at Riviera after suffering a surprising collapse in the final round last year to finish in solo second.

It was his second straight classy outing at the Genesis (he finished T9 in 2018) after sputtering at Hogan's Alley early in his career. J.T. has made seven starts in the new 2019-20 season - in those seven starts he has two wins and three top-fives! Thomas is perhaps playing better than anyone in the world right now and he's continually improved with each start at Riviera. With the depth of great players now on the PGA Tour, it's basically impossible to say with certainty "this guy is going to win this week"...but if I had to pick a winner this week, I'd go with J.T.

Xander Schauffele - DraftKings: $9,200

There is TONS of quality in this $9k range and I could make a reasonable argument for a handful of guys here, but I'm always interested in Xander in "big events", as he has a Koepka-like knack for always showing up against strong fields in the best tournaments. Schauffele usually stays on the backburner when it comes to industry buzz, but he could very easily be in the "hottest player in the world" conversation.

He's suffered some near misses this season, losing in playoffs in both the WGC-HSBC and the Tournament of Champions. Schauffele has two Riviera starts under his belt, going T15-T9 over the last two years and he's a Cali kid that's comfortable with Poa. I'm hoping we can slide under the radar a bit with him this week after he suffered a missed cut at the Farmers and a final-round slide at the WMPO. This is a great bounceback spot for X, a player that has no real weaknesses in his game.

Alexander Noren - DraftKings: $7,300

I realize that I'm skipping over tons of quality players as we go from Xander Schauffele down to Alex Noren. There are lots of guys there that I will mix and match in different lineups. However, in a tournament like this it's impossible to play everybody, so decisions must be made. Noren's price is the obvious attraction here, as I believe he represents tremendous value at just $7.3k. After looking absolutely horrible for the better part of 2019, the Swede has slowly but surely steadied the ship.

He's made the cut in every tournament he's played in the new season with three top-15 finishes in those five starts. Noren has actually gained strokes T2G in every event he's played since May of last year with just one different facet of his game consistently being a little off from week to week at the end of last season. It appears he's finally putting it all together as he heads to a Riviera layout where he notched a T16 in his lone 2018 Genesis appearance. I'm not super concerned about "safety" this week because I think it will take a lineup full of high finishers to make any DFS noise on this slate, but I do feel that Noren checks that "extremely likely to make the cut" box while also bringing top-10 upside to the table.

Joaquin Niemann - DraftKings: $7,300

I realize that I'm bringing some volatility into the mix with Joaquin Niemann, as there are definitely "safer" options available in the mid-$7k price range. However, I'm a big believer in his talent and upside, so I'm willing to take on some risk with him. Niemann hasn't done much since picking up his first PGA Tour win at Greenbrier back in the fall (he did log a top-five in the TOC) and he doesn't really have much course history to speak of (a T44 in his Genesis debut last year)...so it's fair to wonder why I'm in on him this week.

Well, I could mention that he's gained strokes on Approach in 15 of his last 16 measured tournaments or that his tremendous upside has led to 10 top-10 finishes in just 40 professional starts - but it really comes down to his price, which I feel his way too cheap when compared to his explosiveness, and the fact that I gravitate towards great ball strikers on classic-type courses such as Riviera. Look, Niemann could have a bad week on the greens and miss the cut - you have to consider this possibility when rostering him - or he could win the tournament. I understand that this play might not be for everybody, but it's a gamble I'm willing to take at $7.3k.

PGA DFS: DraftKings Core Four - AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Please enjoy this RotoBaller PGA Premium article free for a limited time.

Hello RotoBallers and thanks for joining me for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am!

AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Notes

Full disclosure...this isn't my favorite tournament of the year. It's really a shame, because Pebble Beach is one of the finest golf courses this country has to offer. Unfortunately, instead of just letting some of the best players in the world go at it for four rounds on a great golf course, this event uses a Pro-Am format, which means tedious six-hour rounds and lots of Larry The Cable Guy during the TV coverage. We're also back to a three-course rotation similar to what we saw at the American Express a few weeks ago and we'll have a 54-hole cut instead of the usual 36-hole routine.

Because of the 54-hole cut nature of this event, our first DFS instinct is to get aggressive. There's certainly some players at the top of the salary scale that we would love to get exposure to, like DJ, Patrick Cantlay, and Paul Casey...the problem is that there's not a ton to love in the value range, which makes "Stars & Scrubs" a dicey (though viable in GPPs) proposition. Due to the lack of great value plays that jump out, I find myself leaning towards a more balanced approach this week in single-entry builds, as there are some really solid options scattered throughout the mid-range.

You can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week.

Branden Grace - DraftKings: $9,300

I certainly didn't start this week with Branden Grace in mind. He's a player that I haven't rostered in quite a while, but I've warmed up to the South African throughout my research process this week. Grace looked completely lost for the better part of 2019 and played progressively worse as the year wore on. However, he seems to have figured something out over the short winter break, as he's entered 2020 on fire.

Grace took down the South African Open to kick off the year and has looked sharp in appearances in Abu Dhabi and Phoenix. He gained over five strokes on approach at the Waste Management last week and heads to an AT&T event in which he's logged solid finishes of T28 and T20 over the last two years. I think it's also safe to consider Grace a bit contrarian this week - as he's not really popping in any ownership projections that I've seen - and he's a unique way to gain leverage on a slate where I think we'll see a lot of concentrated ownership

Daniel Berger - DraftKings: $8,900

This is the second-straight week that Daniel Berger has been a member of the Core Four. He played well for us last week in Phoenix, scoring a top-10 finish with blistering weekend rounds of 66 and 67. Berger hasn't played this event in a few years, but logged a T10 in the 2015 AT&T.

As I mentioned last week, this is a player that was once considered a true rising star on the PGA Tour, but injuries have derailed that trajectory. The 26-year-old appears to be getting back on track and has made six of seven cuts in the new season while averaging two strokes gained T2G over his last five tournaments. Berger is a Poa specialist and I expect another strong outing this week.

Russell Knox - DraftKings: $8,600

Russell Knox has been good to me this year, so I'm very content to go back to the well this week. I'm always interested in Knox on shorter layouts and this event's three courses that all come in at less than 7,000 yards qualifies in a big way. Knox's game has translated very well in the AT&T and he's logged two top-15 finishes in this event over the last two years.

He heads to Pebble in sharp form with top-25s in his last two starts. Knox hasn't missed a cut since September and has gained strokes both T2G and on Approach in every subsequent start. All in all, just a really solid play at a reasonable price point.

Jim Furyk - DraftKings: $7,800

We're gonna break ol' Jimmy out of his winter slumber this week. Like Russell Knox, Furyk is a player that I'm always interested in rostering on shorter layouts. He's played well in this event, with a T7 and a T14 on his AT&T resume in three starts since 2015.

The veteran was last seen grinding out top-25s back in the fall and he gained a massive 6.7 strokes on Approach in his last start at the RSM Classic. It was - get this - the 11th-straight tournament in which he gained strokes with his irons. So while the rust factor is a bit of a concern with Furyk this week, I love his grind-it-out style, sharp iron play, and excellent Poa putting splits at $7.8k.

PGA DFS: DraftKings Core Four - Waste Management Phoenix Open

Please enjoy this RotoBaller PGA Premium article free for a limited time.

Hello RotoBallers and thanks for joining me for the Waste Management Phoenix Open!

Waste Management Phoenix Open Notes

The awesome thing about PGA DFS is just how different things can be from one week to the next. Last week's Farmers was something of a "high brow" event with elite players on a tough golf course, while this week's Waste Management Phoenix Open is about as rowdy as the PGA Tour gets with its huge stadium crowds and party atmosphere. However, despite the fundamental differences between the vibes of the tournaments, this week's field of players is really no less impressive than what we saw at Torrey Pines last week and as I've went through my research process this week I've been continually surprised at the quality depth that's available on this slate.

There's a couple of guys at the top of the salary scale this week in Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas that bring ridiculous win equity to the table and we also have some players with monster course history above the $10k mark in Rickie Fowler, Webb Simpson, and Hideki Matsuyama. I'm bringing these guys up here, because you won't find any of them highlighted in this week's Core Four. It's not because they aren't great plays, but simply due to the fact that they are all tempting and I couldn't narrow it down to just one. So, instead of putting all my eggs in one elite-player basket, I'll try to grab some exposure to all of them when making multiple GPP lineups, because this is just truly a great week to have fun making lots of lineups. There's so much to like in the $7k price range that you can pair with the elite guys up top, which allows you to comfortably roster your favorite high-priced player like Rahm or JT, and stack the rest of you lineup with a boatload of these quality mid-$7k guys. For my single-entry rosters, I'll be building around the golfers listed in this week's article, as I feel all of them bring true tournament-winning upside to the table at reasonable prices. Thanks for checking out the Core Four...this is always a fun event, so let's dive in!

You can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week.

Collin Morikawa - DraftKings: $9,200

I’m always a little reluctant to make a player making his course debut a “Core” piece of my rosters, but Collin Morikawa just continues to impress on any type of layout. He was firmly in the mix at the Farmers last week before his third round got away from him. Morikawa gained 3.3 strokes on Approach at Torrey, which was the EIGHTH consecutive tournament that he’s gained strokes with his irons. In fact, since turning professional he’s gained strokes T2G in every tournament he’s played except one! So, despite this being his debut at TPC Scottsdale, I expect his world-class tee-to-green skills to translate very well.

Bubba Watson - DraftKings: $9,000

If you read last week’s Core Four, then you probably remember my thoughts on Keegan Bradley...I tried to get away from him, but everything in my research throughout the week brought me right back to him. It’s been an eerily similar process with Bubba this week. I never feel great about locking him in because he’s so volatile, but he lines up really well for the WMPO. He popped last week in a big way with a T6 at the Farmers and actually led the field in Strokes Gained: T2G at 8.2. On the heels of that sharp outing, Watson heads to one of his “safe places” this week at TPC Scottsdale, a layout where he recorded a T4 last year and a runner-up finish in 2015. Bubba is perhaps the most "course-centric" player on the PGA Tour, but we've seen him be routinely great on the layouts that fit his eye and this is one of those courses. I wouldn’t argue with fading Bubba here - especially in GPPs - due to his volatility, but considering all the positive factors he brings to the table this week, I’m willing to roll the dice.

Sungjae Im - DraftKings: $8,800

Sungjae is quickly becoming a staple in this article. There’s just so much to like with him on a weekly basis (and I truly mean weekly basis, because he plays EVERY WEEK), especially now that he’s getting a second look at the courses on the PGA Tour schedule after a very successful rookie season. Im hasn’t won yet, but I’d argue that he still has tons of win equity. In addition to the upside he’s also ridiculously consistent. He hasn’t missed a cut since the Open Championship last July and has gained strokes T2G in 11 of 13 tournaments since then. Sungjae logged a T7 in his Waste Management debut last year and he feels really underpriced at $8.8k this week.

Daniel Berger - DraftKings: $7,800

There’s a lot to like throughout the $7k price range this week and I could probably make a compelling argument here for half a dozen guys, but my favorite of the bunch is Daniel Berger. There are probably “safer” options than Berger, but I’m intrigued by his upside. He won twice on the PGA Tour before the age of 25, but has been riddled with injury problems for the last couple years. He’s showing signs of life in 2020 and has gained 5.3 (Sony) and 4.4 (AmEx) T2G in his two starts this calendar year. Berger likes this track and has three finishes inside the top-11 at TPC Scottsdale since 2015. The concern here is that his putter has been frosty, but if he can put it together on the greens, he has a strong chance of being in contention on Sunday.

PGA DFS: DraftKings Core Four - Farmers Insurance Open

Please enjoy this RotoBaller PGA Premium article free for a limited time.

Hello RotoBallers and thanks for joining me for the Farmers Insurance Open!

Farmers Insurance Open Notes

We're already several weeks into 2020, but this is the first tournament of the year that feels big. This is the best field we've seen in a long time and golfers will face a challenging Torrey Pines South track. As usual, we have some big decisions to make up top, with players like Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Tiger Woods that we would love to roster. However, putting these guys in your lineups puts a huge dent in the salary cap this week, which means you must be willing to embrace some risk at the lower end of the salary scale.

While that type of 'Stars & Scrubs' approach worked well for an event like last week's AmEx, I have my doubts as to its effectiveness for the Farmers. We've routinely seen the best players in the field be at or near the top of the leaderboard in this event, which sends me down the path of "get as much quality in my lineup as possible" this week. That said, I will be mixing in the big boys in some GPP builds, while going more balanced in single-entry formats.

You can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week.

Gary Woodland - DraftKings: $9,500

Probably not a huge surprise here, as it looks as though Gary Woodland is going to be one of the most heavily-owned players on the board this week. I'm willing to eat a bit of chalk with Woody for a couple of reasons though...he's in solid form and heads to Torrey with four-straight finishes inside the top-seven over his last four starts.

His length and ball-striking ability makes him a great fit for this layout and it shows in his previous Farmers results, as he's finished inside the top-20 in this event every year since 2016. Woodland's price is also palatable and the salary savings he offers when compared to Rory or Rahm makes a difference when you get to the sixth spot in your lineup this week.

Tony Finau - DraftKings: $9,300

We can argue about "win equity" all day - and I understand and acknowledge the concept - but when it comes to Finau I'm admittedly a bit of a homer and subscribe to the much less-statistical thought of "he's too good not to eventually win a big tournament". I know that's a narrative-based statement, but he's also a great statistical fit this week.

Finau's length always serves him well on these types of stretched-out, difficult golf courses and he's been perfect in five Farmers starts since 2015, never finishing outside of the top-25 with a T4 in '17 and a T6 in '18. He's honestly not been great statistically over the last couple of months, but a second-round 62 at the AmEx last week lets me know that his game is rounding into form.

Marc Leishman - DraftKings: $8,300

I'm kinda surprising myself with Marc Leishman here, as he's not a guy that I roster very often. He usually goes as far as his putter carries him - and considering the fact that he was absolutely miserable on the greens during his last start at the Sony - rostering the big Aussie does require something of a leap of faith.

However, Leishman's ball-striking numbers were off the charts at the Sony - he led the field with a MASSIVE 6.8 Strokes Gained on Approach and also gained over 4 strokes Off the Tee - so I'm willing to gamble on him in this week's atmosphere, where I feel that we can devalue putting a bit. His track record at Torrey Pines doesn't blow you away, but it is solid enough (he's made four of five cuts since 2015 with a T8 in '18) that I feel comfortable with him at this DFS price point.

Keegan Bradley - DraftKings: $7,300

Say a little prayer for me here...I've tried my best to get away from Keegan Bradley throughout the week, but I just keep coming back to him. The $7.3k price is obviously the big draw for me, as it just opens up so many things when building lineups. Rostering Keegs at this price allows you to work in a Rory or Rahm if you so choose without relying on a sub-$7k player that you might feel is a dart throw.

He's volatile yes, but he's actually been really consistent in his last few Farmers starts, going T35/5th/T4 at Torrey since 2017. It's possibly a sign of the coming apocalypse that he GAINED strokes putting at the Sony, but I'm not even weighing that here, and instead choosing to focus on his reliably-sharp ball striking and value price tag.

PGA DFS: DraftKings Value Plays - Farmers Insurance Open

Please enjoy this RotoBaller PGA Premium article free for a limited time.

Hello RotoBallers and thanks for joining me for the Farmers Insurance Open! In this article you will find my favorite DraftKings DFS value plays for this week's PGA tournament.

It can be tough to define "value" and that task is made tough because the makeup of each PGA slate is different, which makes it difficult to put a concrete DFS price on what exactly "value" is. So, this article will regularly include plays that are obviously great salary savers, but may also include plays that are "underpriced" or stick out as a great value when compared to their form, course history, or other players in the field.

Farmers Insurance Open: Value Play Notes

This is the strongest field we've seen in 2020, which gives us lots of reason to search for value at the Farmers. If we want to squeeze a couple of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm-caliber players in our DraftKings lineups this week, we'll need to get creative at the bottom of the salary scale.

You can find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. And be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

Gary Woodland - DraftKings: $9,500

It might sound weird to call a guy that's priced $9,500 a "value play", but I think the term is fair when it comes to Gary Woodland this week. Woodland has finished inside the top-seven in his last four starts worldwide and heads to a Torrey Pines course where he's recorded four-straight finishes of T20 or better. Being able to roster the defending U.S. Open champion (who, by the way, won that U.S. Open on a similar-type California course) that's in hot form at anything under $10k qualifies as "value" in my book.

Keegan Bradley - DraftKings: $7,300

When we start shopping for traditional value plays down the salary scale, we must be willing to embrace some volatility. Keegan Bradley is pretty much the definition of the term volatile, but he's an intriguing play this week if you've got the stomach for it. Bradley logged a T12 at the Sony Open the last time he teed it up and he has a suprisingly-strong track record at Torrey Pines, with top-five finishes at the Farmers in two of the last three years. Believe it or not, Bradley actually gained strokes putting at the Sony, but that is definitely the exception and not the rule...and not something we should expect again this week.

Talor Gooch - DraftKings: $7,200

We can do a little "heat check" here with Talor Gooch, who is coming off a solid T17 at last week's AmEx. Gooch also popped for some nice finishes back in the fall, with a top-25 at the RSM and a top-five in Houston. In addition to the glimpses of form, the Oklahoma State product scored a T3 in last year's Farmers and made the 36-hole cut here in 2018. Gooch is a tremendous ball striker that has the ability to get hot and post birdies in bunches. He finished the 2018-19 ranked 15th on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Approach.

Maverick McNealy - DraftKings: $6,600

A three-time All-American at Stanford, many had pegged Maverick McNealy as golf's "next big thing". After failing to get his Tour Card via sponsor's exemptions, McNealy did it the old-fashioned way with his play on the Korn Ferry Tour last season. He's beginning to show some signs of his huge potential by making seven of nine cuts since September and he's averaged gaining four-strokes total over his last five tournaments. He's a California kid and is familiar with both Torrey Pines and Poa putting surfaces. McNealy logged a T29 in his lone Farmers start in 2018.

Brandon Wu - DraftKings: $6,300

Another Stanford kid that's trying to find his way on to the PGA Tour. Brandon Wu is part of the famous Wolff-Hovland-Morikawa class, but he elected to stay in school a bit longer in order to compete for the U.S. Walker Cup team. He logged a T35 at the U.S. Open last year and notched a T17 at the Houston Open in October while playing on a sponsor's exemption. Wu will once again get a sponsor's exemption into this week's Farmers, but he's the type of player that has a legitimate chance to take advantage of the opportunity. He's very solid from tee to green, is a strong iron player, and a good putter that knows how to handle Poa.

PGA DFS: DraftKings Core Four - The American Express

Please enjoy this RotoBaller PGA Premium article free for a limited time.

Hello RotoBallers and thanks for joining me for The American Express!

The American Express Notes

The most obvious factor that jumps out at me from a DFS perspective this week is this tournament's format. Players will play three different courses over the first three rounds before a 54-hole cut determines who will tee it up on the PGA West course for the final round. This event is also a pro-am, which might not sound like a big deal, but is something that some of the pros struggle to deal with. All told, this event's format lends itself to an aggressive, 'Stars & Scrubs'-type strategy. The downside is there's not a lot to love in the 'Stars' at the top of the salary scale this week (outside of one player, which we'll get to in just a second), which has sent me in the direction a more 'balanced' build this week.

You can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week.

Sungjae Im - DraftKings: $11,000

There is one player that I'll be spending up for this week and that's Sungjae Im. Even at $11k, Im is projected to be the most popular player on this slate - which does make him a legitimate fade candidate in large-field GPPs - but despite his high ownership, I will still have Im in basically all of my single-entry DraftKings lineups. The 21-year-old was dominant on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2018 and earned Rookie of the Year honors on the PGA Tour last season. A win or multiple wins seems like the natural progression for him in 2020 and the time may very well be this week. Im has some experience with this event - logging a T12 in his debut last year - and he's an explosive enough scorer (Led the PGA Tour in Total Birdies last season) to rack up the low scores needed to win this week at what is basically a glorified hit & giggle.

Brian Harman - DraftKings: $8,600

Do you ever watch a football game and wonder why a team doesn't continue running a play that's successful? You see this all the time, except for the New England Patriots, who will run the same play half a dozen times if a team doesn't adapt to stopping it. That's kinda how I feel about PGA DFS...if I'm successful with a player and feel like he's a great fit for the next tournament or tournaments, I won't hesitate at all to continue riding him. Apologies for the long-winded speech, but I say all that to say that I'll once again have Brian Harman in the majority of my lineups this week, even though I wrote him up for the Sony Open.

Harman's result in Hawaii was a ho-hum T32, but I'm willing to chalk that up to an ugly third-round 74 in nasty conditions - he shot 68 or lower in each of his other three rounds - and he should find much smoother sailing in California this week. Harman missed the cut in this event last year while mired in a slump, but had went T20-T3-T11 in his three previous starts in the AmEx. He had a strong fall and is on track for another great outing here.

Russell Knox - DraftKings: $8,100

I have a longstanding "love/hate relationship" with Russell Knox. We're on good terms right now, so I'm firing him up this week. Knox is often held back by his lack of distance off the tee, so he always pops on my radar on shorter layouts like he'll face this week. He's handled this trio of courses well over the last couple of years, logging a T18 and a T29 in his last two AmEx starts. Knox gained 5.9 strokes on approach last week at the Sony - the third-best mark in the field - but finished just T32 due to losing strokes both off the tee and putting. He should be fine off the tee this week in pristine conditions, so we're hoping that he can find his putting stroke in California, as he's averaged gaining a massive 5.5 strokes total over his last five tournaments.

Harris English - DraftKings: $7,700

Remember this dude? Harris English was a legit money-printing machine during the fall season, posting a ridiculous four top-six finishes in just six starts, after clinging to his PGA Tour status via the Korn Ferry Finals. He's been on the shelf since November thanks to that shaky priority status, but will be back in action this week at the AmEx, a tournament in which he logged a T11 in 2018. English has gained a ridiculous average of 4.8 strokes T2G over his last five starts, and while I do wish he had some more recent action under his belt, we are grabbing a ton of upside at just $7.7k.
