12 months agoSan Diego Padres reliever Andres Munoz (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery on Friday. Without daily news flow, this development comes as a surprise, but Munoz had encountered discomfort earlier in spring training. The 21-year-old debuted last season to a 3.91 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 31 percent strikeout rate in 23 frames while averaging a whopping 100.2 MPH on his heater. He was expected to be a key setup man in 2020 prior to the surgery. With the season start date in doubt, it makes sense for Munoz to get a head start on his recovery. Fantasy drafters counting on him for strikeouts will need to wait until the middle of next year. Munoz’s absence gives a bump to fellow reliever Emilio Pagan, who’s now the primary handcuff to closer Kirby Yates.--Andrew Le - RotoBaller

1 year agoSan Diego Padres reliever Andres Munoz threw his first simulated game of the spring on Saturday. After fatigue derailed the end of a fantastic rookie season, Munoz is expected to throw another bullpen session on Tuesday with the hope of appearing in his first Spring Training game on Thursday. Munoz posted a 1.69 ERA through 20 MLB appearances in 2019 before allowing six runs over his final 1.2 innings to tarnish to final numbers in his rookie year. Munoz is expected to be a key part of the setup crew behind Kirby Yates and could be an excellent source of holds this season.--Jonathan Chan - Rotoballer
