Recent Update

5 months agoCincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson and shortstop Jose Garcia both played integral roles in helping the club reach the postseason down the stretch in 2020, with president of baseball operations Dick Williams confirming Friday that the duo “belong on a big league field.” Stephenson, the club’s No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline, and Garcia, No. 6, will both enter Spring Training with the chance to break camp with the club. Stephenson’s path to playing time is muddled by the duo of Tucker Barnhart and Curt Casali, who figure to share catching duties. Garcia has the inside track at the starting job as of now, but the Reds may be active either in the free-agent (Didi Gregorius) or trade (Francisco Lindor) market to acquire an established shortstop.--Jesse Borek - RotoBaller

Older News

6 months agoCincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson is making his first MLB start on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs. He is batting seventh in the game. Stephenson made his MLB debut back in a July 28th game against the Cubs. He entered the game in the seventh inning and went on to go 2-for-2 with a home run and a walk, but he was sent to the team's alternate site right after the game where he remained until this recent call-up. The Reds have rotated between Tucker Barnhart and Curt Casali at catcher this year. We could see Stephenson make a few starts a week going forward, but he certainly shouldn't see consistent playing time. Stephenson showed solid plate discipline and some power potential in the minors. He's worth monitoring for dynasty owners.--Andrew Ericksen - RotoBaller
