7 months agoKansas City Royals second baseman Nicky Lopez sustained a shin ailment during Saturday’s contest against the White Sox, forcing him to exit early after going 0-for-2 with six runners left on base. Lopez has scuffled to begin 2020, going 2-for-16 with no extra-base hits in his first eight games. Any extended absence for Lopez would likely allow Whit Merrifield to hold down second base, further prolonging his positional flexibility. Kansas City seems committed to giving Lopez a chance to hold down the keystone, even after delivering a .601 OPS in 103 games last season; but that doesn’t mean that he holds very much value for season-long formats, no matter the league size.--Jesse Borek - RotoBaller

12 months agoKansas City Royals second baseman Nicky Lopez knocked a couple more singles against the Reds on Saturday, raising his spring average up to .316. Lopez has now performed well in back-to-back springs, but he struggled last season when he got the opportunity to face regular season pitching. The 25-year-old is most valued for his batting average and defense as he doesn't bring a whole lot of power or speed to the game, but he can chip in a steal or homer here or there. If star shortstop Adalberto Mondesi (shoulder) is unable to go at the start of the season, Lopez could pick up a few starts at shortstop, helping stretch his versatility in lineups.--Billy Stonick - RotoBaller
