A 17-inning game ends in grand fashion as Martin Maldonado delivered a walk-off homerun.
It was a desperate victory for a Milwaukee Brewers (17-34) team that had lost seven games in a row before Sunday’s meeting against the Arizona Dbacks (23-26).
There were 32 hits in total during the marathon extra inning affair. The Brewers were able to avoid the three-game sweep to the D-backs thanks to a homer by Maldonado. The Brew Crew catcher had four hits, two RBI, two walks and scored three times.
"I saw something up and put a good swing on it," Maldonado, who caught all 17 innings, told MLB.com. "That's what I was looking for. I was really tired so I was happy to end the game like that."
Both starting pitchers had their struggles on Sunday. Tyler Wagner allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched and couldn’t get out of the fourth. Chase Anderson struggled for the D-Backs, allowing six runs in five innings.
Matt Garza was scheduled to start Monday, but had to step in and pitch five innings of relief for the victory, so Mike Fiers will take the hill on Monday.
