Position, Team, NFL Draft Spot: QB, Cleveland Browns, 3.31
Dynasty Positional Rank: 40+
Redraft Target Round: Unranked, not viable for 2016
Analysis: Kessler was viewed as a late round prospect, but the Browns new “Money Ball” strategy had other ideas. At the end of the third round, Cleveland selected Kessler over the likes of Cardale Jones and Connor Cook to name a few. This was the strategy for the Browns throughout the entire draft, as they had a few questionable selections, but a great overall draft.
It’s hard to believe that Kessler is going to make an impact this season, as the Browns seem set on Robert Griffin III. They also have Josh McCown, who will likely see the field before Kessler if RG3 struggles. That means Kessler is going to be a non-factor this season, and he shouldn’t be selected in redraft leagues.
Any time a team drafts a quarterback in the third round, they need to be looked at a bit more. Kessler was certainly one of the more questionable picks in this draft, but Hue Jackson later told the media and fans they need to trust him on this one. Maybe he knows something that no one else sees. Kessler certainly is an accurate quarterback, but he struggles to throw on the runs and he’s a bit small for an NFL quarterback. He shouldn’t be a top option, but he also isn’t the worst dynasty stash, as it sounds like Hue Jackson is going to give Kessler every opportunity to succeed in the NFL.
