Redraft Target Round: Late round selection in deep leagues
Analysis: There was buzz about Paxton Lynch being taken in the top-10 picks of the NFL Draft, but that quickly passed as the draft moved on. Ultimately, the Broncos traded up for their franchise quarterback, and selected him at the end of round one. This is around where many people had Lynch mocked, and it wasn’t very surprising that he ended up with the Broncos, who are in desperate need of a quarterback after Peyton Manning retired and Brock Osweiler signed with the Texans.
Mark Sanchez is currently listed atop the Broncos depth chart, but Paxton Lynch could push for the starting job if he has an impressive preseason. That doesn’t seem all that likely to me, though, as Lynch isn’t quite NFL ready, and the Broncos will likely use Sanchez as a bridge quarterback, as they groom Lynch for the future. He could see some playing time this season, though, as Mark Sanchez tends to turn the ball over quite a bit, and the Broncos need a quarterback that can protect the ball, as they still have an elite defense.
Lynch’s athletic ability makes him an elite dynasty quarterback. He ran for 687 yards and 17 touchdowns in his career at Memphis, and mobility is one of the best traits in a fantasy quarterback. Lynch also has as much upside as any quarterback in this draft, but he also comes with plenty of risk. The Broncos are a team that can groom him to be a start, as they can rely heavily on their defense, and Lynch is a great dynasty pick.
