2016 NFL Draft Analysis for Fantasy Football - Running Back Derrick Henry

Position, Team, NFL Draft Spot: RB, Tennessee Titans, 2.14

Dynasty Positional Rank: 30

Redraft Target Round: Mid-round selection

Analysis: There was a lot of talk about Henry slipping into the end of the first round, but that did not come to fruition. Instead, he fell into the middle of the second round and he was selected by the Tennessee Titans. This came as a bit of a surprise, as they recently traded for DeMarco Murray, but this shows that NFL teams are moving more away from the workhorse back and more towards multiple running back systems.

Tennessee wasn’t the ideal landing spot for Henry, as he’s an NFL ready prospect with a big body and good measurables, but he’ll be stuck behind DeMarco Murray early in his career. Henry will likely see the field in short yardage and goal line situations, which could provide a bit of value in terms of fantasy. I’m also expecting him to somewhat force the Titans hand as the season progresses, as he’s too good of a talent to keep off the field. It wouldn’t be surprising if Henry and Murray were splitting carries by the end of the season. Still, Henry is a running back that comes with quite a bit of risk in season long leagues.

Henry has phenomenal upside in dynasty leagues because of the type of runner he is. He can carry the ball 30 times per game without wearing down in the fourth quarter. He has great explosion, as he averaged over five yards per carry in each of his three seasons at Alabama. Henry will also be a touchdown threat from his rookie season until he retires because of his size. He has the potential to be a true workhorse running back, and that’s a rare player to find in the NFL right now.
