Position, Team, NFL Draft Spot: RB, Miami Dolphins, 3.10
Dynasty Positional Rank: 46
Redraft Target Round: Late round selection
Analysis: The Dolphins clearly needed help in their backfield during the draft after they struck out in free agency. Once the Cowboys selected Ezekiel Elliott, there were question marks about who the Dolphins were going to choose at running back. In the third round, Miami selected Kenyan Drake ahead of a few other running backs that ranked higher than him. It came as a bit of a surprise, but Drake is a running back that has home run ability, which is never a bad thing to have on your team.
Drake will likely have a role his rookie season, as the Dolphins try to take a bit of pressure of Jay Ajayi, who has earned himself an injured tag after tearing his ACL in 2011. Many people expect Ajayi’s knee to give out at some point and he is going to need micro-fracture surgery. Drake will likely play a change of pace role for the Dolphins, while also taking some third down snaps, as well. If he plays well early on, the Dolphins will likely increase his role along with his fantasy appeal. There is also always the possibility that Ajayi’s knee can’t handle an entire 16 game season, and Drake would then become the lead back for the Dolphins. If you have Ajayi on your team, Drake will make a great handcuff. He’s also a good option to have in case Ajayi gets injured.
Drake’s dynasty outlook is very similar to his season long potential. Ajayi’s knee is always going to be a concern, but he is going to get the first shot at taking over the offense. Drake will likely need a few things to go his way in order to play a large enough role year in and year out to be considered a great fantasy option. With that being said, there isn’t much confidence surrounding Ajayi’s knee right now, and Drake will make an elite dynasty hold for now.
