Position, Team, NFL Draft Spot: TE, Atlanta Falcons, 3.18
Dynasty Positional Rank: 25
Redraft Target Round: Unranked, not viable for 2016
Analysis: Stanford has produced a few good tight ends in the last couple years, as Coby Fleener and Zach Ertz have been enjoying their early years in the NFL. In the middle of the third round, the Falcons selected another tight end from Stanford in Austin Hooper, who will be looking to start his legacy early in his career, as well.
Hooper’s fantasy outlook for re-draft leagues is a bit murky right now, as he’s currently penciled behind Jacob Tamme and Levine Toilolo on the Falcons depth chart. The Falcons utilized one tight end quite a bit last season, as Jacob Tamme was second on the Falcons in receiving yards. It’s unlikely Hooper unseats Tamme this season, which means he isn’t going to have a ton of value his rookie year, as Toilolo was a non-factor in fantasy leagues last season.
Hooper has great potential in dynasty leagues, as he looked great as a receiver at Stanford. In only two seasons, he caught 74 passes for 937 yards and 8 touchdowns. He has very good hands and can catch the football in traffic over the middle of the field. The Falcons used the tight end quite a bit last season, and it’s unlikely that will change once Hooper wins the starting job. He will be a good fantasy option at some point in his career, but that’s likely at least a year or two away.
