Position, Team, NFL Draft Spot: TE, Dallas Cowboys, 6.42
Dynasty Positional Rank: 40+
Redraft Target Round: Unranked, not viable for 2016
Analysis: Gathers is a former basketball player for Baylor that is transitioning to the tight end position in the NFL. He is a serious project, but the Cowboys saw enough upside in his to draft him late in the sixth round.
Gathers will not see the field this season even if the Cowboys are decimated by injuries. He should not be considered in re-draft leagues regardless of how deep the league is.
Gathers could make a good dynasty option. He is a tremendous athlete that dominated on the basketball court at Baylor. Other tight ends have transitioned from basketball to football smoothly, including Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham. Gathers was an elite rebounder, which will help him shield off defenders on the football field. He flashed great physical skills during his workouts and Gathers stated that he had been practicing with a few of the Baylor football players in the offseason. There is no confirmation to that, but Gathers is more than athletic enough to become a success story in a few years.
