Padres Trade For Luke Voit
3 years agoThe San Diego Padres are acquiring first baseman Luke Voit from the New York Yankees on Friday in exchange for minor league pitcher Justin Lang. Voit could settle into the regular designated hitter role for the Padres this year, and he should help replace some power that will be lost with superstar shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. out for three months due to a fractured wrist. The Yankees no longer had a need for Voit after re-signing Anthony Rizzo and trading for third baseman Josh Donaldson. The 31-year-old right-handed slugger had 20-plus home runs in both 2019 and 2020, when he led the league with 22 dingers in the shortened season, but he hit just .239 with 11 round-trippers and 35 RBI in 68 games last year. Voit is useful for his power and not much else, and the move to Petco Park is a slight downgrade.
