Merrill Kelly Dominates In First Spring Start
3 years agoArizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Merrill Kelly struck out eight of the nine batters he faced in three scoreless innings against the San Francisco Giants in his first Cactus League start on Wednesday. His fastball touched 94-95 mph. Kelly focused on his changeup this offseason, and he got swings and misses on the pitch on Wednesday. The right-hander went 7-11 with a 4.44 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 27 starts (158 innings) for the D-backs last season, but he was the team's most consistent starter despite missing around a month at the end of the year due to COVID-19. The 33-year-old enters the 2022 season with a secure spot in Arizona's starting rotation.
