Zack Wheeler To Make Spring Debut Saturday
3 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies starting pitcher Zack Wheeler (shoulder) will make his Grapefruit League debut on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, and he will also throw innings "somewhere" next Thursday, according to manager Joe Girardi. Wheeler got a late start this spring due to right shoulder soreness, but he could avoid opening the year on the injured list as long as he doesn't have any setbacks. The 31-year-old right-hander made his first All-Star team in his first year in Philly in 2021, going 14-10 with a career-low 2.78 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, a career-high 29.1% strikeout rate and a career-low 5.4% walk rate in a league-high 213 1/3 innings over 32 starts. Despite his shoulder issue, Wheeler will remain an early round selection in fantasy drafts.
