Xander Bogaerts Won't Sign Extension Before Friday
3 years agoBoston Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts said there's no chance that he'll sign a contract extension with the team before Opening Day on Friday against the division-rival New York Yankees. Bogaerts has an opt-out clause in his current contract after this season, which he's expected to exercise in order to become a free agent. The Red Sox also failed to reach an extension with star third baseman Rafael Devers, but he's under contract through 2023. If Bogaerts departs Boston after this season, it will allow Trevor Story to move back to his natural position of shortstop. Bogaerts, a three-time All-Star, hit .295/.370/.493 with 23 home runs, 79 RBI, 90 runs scored and five stolen bases in 603 plate appearances over 144 games for Boston last year.
