Anthony Bender Falters Again Tuesday, Takes Loss
3 years agoMiami Marlins closer Anthony Bender was charged with his first loss of the season in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Angels. Bender entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied at 3. He got the first out but then walked Jack Mayfield, who was replaced by Tyler Wade. Wade stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Bender. Wade then scored the winning run on a fielder's choice. Bender's final stat line was one run allowed on no hits and a walk through 1/3 of an inning. The 27-year-old appeared to be the team's primary closer while Dylan Floro (arm) is on the injured list with arm soreness. However, Bender now owns a 7.71 ERA through three appearances and has one save, one blown save, and now a loss. It will be interesting to see if manager Don Mattingly continues to give Bender opportunities in high-leverage situations given how he has fared to this point.
