Roquan Smith Wants To Remain With Bears Long-Term
3 years agoChicago Bears linebacker Roquan Smith, who is in line for a contract extension entering his fifth season in the NFL, said the long-term plan is to remain with the Bears. The 25-year-old is one of the team's most impactful veterans and a core building block in new head coach Matt Eberflus' defense. General manager Ryan Poles said an extension for Smith is "something we have to address" at the owners' meetings last month. Smith ranked fifth in the NFL in tackles (163) last year and was a second-team All-Pro selection in 2020. The former first-rounder ranks ahead of Zach Cunningham and Darius Leonard in tackles for loss (43) and is second behind Leonard in sacks with 14.0 in his four-year career. Extension or not, Smith will be firmly in the IDP mix at his position next season.
