Cardinals Take College Arm Cooper Hjerpe In First Round
2 years agoThe St. Louis Cardinals drafted Oregon State left-hander Cooper Hjerpe with the 22nd overall pick of the 2022 MLB draft on Sunday. Hjerpe was considered one of the best and most consistent college arms in this year's thin class. He has pretty average stuff, but his unique arm angle and above-average curveball give hitters fits. The 21-year-old southpaw can throw strikes with all of his offerings, and he's been compared to Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder had a 2.53 ERA and 0.87 WHIP with 161 strikeouts and 23 walks in 103 1/3 innings as a junior at Oregon State in 2022. Hjerpe could easily become one of the best pitchers in this draft class, and he could rise quickly through St. Louis' farm system.
