2 years agoNew England Patriots tight end Jonnu Smith split routes 50/50 with fellow tight end Hunter Henry in their only preseason game together. He caught 28 of his 45 targets for 294 yards and only one touchdown in 16 games last season. The 26-year-old averaged 8.3 YAC per reception and owned just 9% of the team's target shares. Henry was the preferred option in the red zone and caught nine touchdowns while being targeted 17 times inside the 20-yard line in 2021. New England will look to manufacture touches for Smith, and there is an emphasis on getting him more involved in the offense. The Dolphins were generous to opposing tight ends and ranked 30th in DVOA against the position in 2021. Henry and Smith will be on the field in two tight-end formations.
