Robinson Chirinos (C, TEX) - Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add in Deep AL-Only Leagues or Leagues with Two Catcher Slots

ANALYSIS: Heading into the 2014 season, Robinson Chirinos had one career home run and seven RBI with a .189 batting average. Which begs the question: How did this 30-year-old lifelong minor leaguer become the starting catcher for a team that has two world series appearances in the past four years? Well, for starters it has something to do with the Rangers' downward spiral over the past two years, but it also comes as a result of Chirinos' move behind the dish. Since making the transition in 2008, his offensive numbers have improved, most notably his BABIP, which rose up to .324 in his final full year in the minors in 2012. Chirinos has solid power, smacking a career-high 18 home runs in 2010. He currently sits at 11 homers, but he doesn't get on-base nearly enough (.275 OBP) to warrant being a number one fantasy catcher. Fantasy owners can consider adding Chirinos in very deep AL-Only Leagues, or leagues with two catcher slots, but nothing more.
