The 2015 season is well underway, and of course everyone is looking to improve their team. Over the course of the season I’ll be giving you two players at second base and shortstop per week who I think can help your team. Below our my recommendations for Week 10 of the fantasy baseball season.
These players are usually widely available in any format, and should turn nice profits in the weeks to come. As always, feel free to reach out to me directly @Roto_Dubs with any questions about the middle infield or fantasy baseball in general.
Editor’s Note: to read about even more waiver wire options for second base and shortstop, be sure to check out our famous waiver wire pickups list which is a running list that is updated daily.
Waiver Wire Pickups At Second Base (2B)
Brett Lawrie (2B/3B, OAK) - Owned in 23.7% of Fleaflicker leagues
Lawrie has quietly put together an okay season. He’s been healthy, which is a shocker, and has begun to reward fantasy owners who invested in him. He’s gone 10 for his last 26 with five runs scored, six RBIs and a pair of homers. Lawrie has always had the raw talent, but an inability to stay on the field has made it hard for him to ever really get things going. I see him as a post-hype sleeper this year, and I think that he could contribute to fantasy teams immediately and in the future.
Baller Move: Add in points leagues with 10+ teams/add in roto leagues with 10+ teams
Jace Peterson (2B/3B, ATL) - Owned in 13.9% of Fleaflicker leagues
Peterson has been a steady low-end fantasy middle infielder all season, and he’s beginning to pick it up in the last couple weeks. He’s not jumping off the page in any stat category, but for second base he’s more than serviceable. He hit .310 in his last seven games with five runs scored and four RBIs, and should continue to produce modest yet consistent numbers as the season progresses. He’s already swiped six bags this year, and could be a very cheap add for 15-20 steals by the end of the year. If you’ve got an open middle infield spot in a deeper league, this could be your guy.
Baller Move: Add in points leagues with 10+ leagues/add in roto leagues with 10+ teams
Waiver Wire Pickups At Shortstop (SS)
Ruben Tejada (SS/2B/3B, NYM) - Owned in 2.5% of Fleaflicker leagues
Talk about names I never thought I’d type in this column. Tejada has been producing since being given a crack at the starting lineup thanks to David Wright’s injury. Daniel Murphy was just placed on the DL as well, and Tejada could make for a nice injury fill-in on your fantasy roster as well as in New York. In his last seven games he’s hitting .500 (!) with five runs scored, four RBI and a stolen base. Tejada seems to have a firm grip on the keystone over the next couple of weeks at least. If you’re not limited in transactions or FAAB, snatch him up and enjoy the hits while he’s hot.
Baller Move: Add in points leagues with 10+ teams/add in roto leagues with 10+ teams
Jean Segura (SS, MIL)—Owned in 59.8% of Fleaflicker leagues
Segura may or may not be available in your league. Since he’s one of those guys who many wouldn’t waste a precious DL spot on, he could be there following his recent hand injury. He’s put together an above-average season so far, hitting .286 with 19 runs scored, 14 RBIs, and six stolen bases. Since returning from the DL, he’s been even hotter, hitting .393 in six games. I’ve always been a big Segura fan, and I think he caught a bit of a bad rap after an abysmal 2014. I think the fact that he suffered a personal tragedy (the death of his son) played a big role in that. He’s returned to his 2013 form this season, and I expect big things out of him going forward.
Baller Move: Add in all points leagues/add in all roto leagues
Bonus Pickup
Carlos Correa (SS, HOU) - Owned in 38% of Fleaflicker Leagues
Correa is the #2 prospect in Major League Baseball. He's been the most anticipated fantasy baseball call-up for about a month, and he finally received the call Sunday from the big club in Houston. Correa has immediate fantasy relevance in all leagues. Run to your waiver wire, snag him, and then read Uncle Leo's waiver wire recommendation for Correa and pat yourself on the back.
