The Atlanta Braves placed Freddie Freeman on the 15-day DL with a right wrist contusion, retroactive to June 18, according to MLB.com.
It’s a major loss for a Braves team that was creeping back in the race for the NL East crown. The 25-year-old is batting .299/.367/.520 with 12 HR and 41 RBI over 66 games this season. Freeman is a key component in the Atlanta lineup.
“The Braves have not released the results of the MRI exam Freeman underwent Monday to determine what has caused his recent right wrist discomfort. But the 25-year-old did not travel with the club to Washington early Monday evening. The Braves open a series Tuesday night against the Nationals,” according to the Monday MLB.com report.
Freeman was officially placed on the DL on Tuesday. At 35-35, the Braves are two games out of first place, behind the New York Mets and Washington Nationals. These next two weeks will be important to see if they can hang in the race or at worst, not lose too much ground.
Joey Terdoslavich is likely to get the call to replace Freeman on the active roster. The 26-year-old has played in four minor league games with a .250 BA, 1 HR and 1 RBI.
Kelly Johnson has filled in at first so far in Freeman's absence. Terdoslavich would give Atlanta manager, Fredi Gonzalez, another left-handed option.
