Matt Cain didn’t have the return he would have hoped on Thursday when he allowed five runs to the Miami Marlins.
Cain, 30, missed most of 2014 with a flexor tendon strain in his right elbow. The right-hander made his 2015 debut over a year after he suffered the injury. He allowed the five runs on seven hits over five innings pitched.
Cain wasn’t doing all the bad until the fifth inning. He allowed two homeruns and four runs in total for his final inning of work. One of those homers was to the opposing pitcher, Jose Fernandez, who was making his return to the MLB after more than a year off because of Tommy John surgery.
Location was a factor in Cain’s return. He walked four against just two strikeouts in the contest.
Cain has been one of the top pitchers in MLB throughout his 10-year career. He’s made three all-star teams and owns a career 3.39 ERA. In his career, he has posted ERA marks higher than 4.00 just three times in ten seasons (2006, 2013, 2014). He hasn't been the same pitcher in recent years though.
The New York Mets will be Cain’s next opponent when he returns to the hill.
