The St. Louis Cardinals placed Jon Jay on the 15-day DL, according to FOX Sports.
The outfielder will be allowed to rest his ailing wrist, which has a stress reaction/bone bruise in it. Jay’s DL stint is retroactive for July 1, but he won’t likely return until after the all-star break.
The 30-year-old could use the time off because he’s batting .223 with one homer and 10 RBI in 57 games. It will actually be his second time this season on the DL.
The Cardinals will call up Tim Cooney in his spot. Cooney will pitch his second career MLB game on Thursday against the San Diego Padres. He was just named to the Pacific Coast League all-star team. The 24-year-old is 6-4 with a 2.74 ERA in 14 starts at Memphis and has held opponents to a .195 batting average, which is best in the PCL.
His first start didn’t go too well. On April 30, Cooney allowed three runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched against the Philadelphia Phillies.
