The St. Louis Cardinals acted quickly after Matt Holliday was reinjured on Wednesday by acquiring Brandon Moss from the Cleveland Indians for Rob Kaminsky, according to ESPN.com.
Moss, 31, can play first base and outfield for the Cardinals. After an All-Star season in Oakland last year with 25 HR and 81 RBI, Moss was struggling this season in Cleveland with a .217 BA. His power production is still there, as he has 15 HR and 50 RBI.
Holliday pulled up lame while running to first base on Wednesday. The leftfielder was batting .290 with 4 HR and 31 RBI in 63 games before he suffered his second strained right quad of the season. He also missed time earlier in the season with the same injury. Moss will likely be plugged into Holliday’s spot, and bat in the heart of the lineup.
Moss is under contract through 2016, and will most likely see time at first even when Holliday comes back. The Indians picked up a highly touted starting pitcher in Kaminsky. The 20-year-old was a first-round pick (28th overall) of the Cardinals in 2013. He is 6-5 with a 2.09 ERA in 17 games while striking out 79 batters in 94 2/3 innings for Class A this season. He is currently leading the Florida State League in ERA and is tied for eighth in strikeouts.
