Steven Matz threw on flat ground Monday for the first time since he injured his lat muscle almost four weeks ago, according to ESPN New York.
The New York Mets starting pitcher had two brilliant starts in his rookie season, including an overwhelmingly impressive minor league portfolio, before landing on the DL. His timetable is still unknown and could be a while for his return because the Mets will likely take their time with the young right-hander.

In two starts, Matz pitched a combine 13 2/3 innings while only allowing two runs with 14 strikeouts. In his second start, he held the Los Angeles Dodgers scoreless with 8 strikeouts. Fortunately for New York, it has utilized the rest of its young pitching to take a hold of first place in the National League East.
If Matz does return this season, the Mets would likely go back to a six-man starting rotation for the last month before a possible postseason berth.
