Cashman Says Pineda (Forearm) Won't Return In Augst

New York Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has ruled out Michael Pineda returning in August.

Pineda, 26, has been out since after his July 24 start with a flexor forearm muscle strain in his pitching arm. The starting pitcher is still a few days away from throwing but he will likely make a couple of minor league rehab starts before his returns.

It’s a major loss for the Yankees as the Toronto Blue Jays have cut the American League East lead to 5 1/2 games. The right-hander is 9-7 with a 3.97 ERA in what is already a thin starting rotation in New York. He’s had his share of injuries but when he’s healthy, he’s one of the better pitchers in the AL.

The Yankees called up Luis Severino to replace Pineda. The 21-year-old rookie might have to fill the spot in the rotation until sometime in September.

Once he was promoted to Triple-A Scranton, the Cuban dominated with a 7-0 record and a 1.97 ERA.

His MLB debut will be on Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox.
