Matt Kemp has been placed on the revocable trade waiver, according to MLBdailydish.com.
If Kemp goes through waivers unclaimed, the San Diego Padres could trade the outfielder to any team. Teams would have to acquire the 30-year-old before Aug. 31 because he would be ineligible to play in the postseason if traded after said date.
Kemp isn’t having his best season during his first year with the Padres. The righty has a .255 BA with 11 HR and 60 RBI this season. The Padres would save $86 million on Kemp’s contract if they can somehow trade him away. He still has four more years on his deal and hasn’t produced like he normally has during his 10-year career, even though he hit 25 HR and 89 RBI with a .287 BA in 2014. During his career, Kemp averages a .288 BA, 25 HR and 93 RBI as he’s been one of the better players in the National League.
It might be in the Padres best interest this season to trade Kemp. In his last 119 plate appearances, Kemp has a .282/.361/.485 batting line. If traded now, the new team’s offense would be boosted tremendously.
It’s going to be tough for a team to trade considering that contract. The Dodgers will pay $14 million of the $86 million owed.
