The Toronto Blue Jays have optioned Drew Hutchinson to Triple-A Buffalo and will be calling up Matt Hague, according to Sportsnet.
The move to send the starting pitcher down to the minors is because the club will roll with a four-man rotation since they have two days off over the next 10 days. Hutchinson won’t likely return until Aug. 29, according to the report.
Hutchinson, 24, is coming off one of his better starts of the year as he helped the Blue Jays avoid a three-game sweep at home to the New York Yankees. The right-hander’s 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball helped Toronto move back to a half a game behind the Yanks for first place in the AL East.
It’s been a strange season for Hutchinson who has a 12-2 record but owns a 5.06 ERA. Run support from the highest scoring team in MLB is the reason his record is what it is. While he’s gone, Toronto will call up Hague as well as Ezequiel Carrera because he will be replaced by Aaron Loup.
Hague leads the International League with a .348 batting average, 83 RBIs, a .427 on-base percentage and 161 hits, according to Fox Sports. The infielder will help an already dominant offense while Cabrera has already played 70 games this season with the Jays. He has 3 HR with 21 RBI and a .279 BA.
