Baltimore Orioles utility man Steve Pearce will begin a rehab assignment Thursday with the Gulf Coast League.
It’s been a month since Pearce has been on the field with the Orioles because he’s been dealing with an oblique injury. The 32-year-old will likely play a few minor league games before he returns to the main roster. All rosters can expand to 40 players on Sept. 1, which means that Baltimore could wait until then to call him back up.

In 58 games this season, Pearce owns a .227 BA with 7 HR and 24 RBI in 176 at-bats. It’s been a disappointing season, but last year he was one of the reasons the Orioles made it to the postseason. He had a .293 BA with 21 HR and 49 RBI in 102 games with 338 at-bats.
The Orioles currently sit five games back for first place in the AL East while only a half a game out of the second Wild Card spot.
